I am pleased to inform you of the launch of the Observatory on Structures and Institutions of Inequality in Latin America. This Observatory, funded by the Ford Foundation, is administered from the University of Miami’s Center for Latin American Studies and is a three-year project.
The goal of this project is to foster attention and research on social and economic inequalities in Latin America, and their effects on society and politics. The centerpiece of this project is this web portal, as a source for information and studies on inequality in the region, as well as an avenue for interaction among scholars, practitioners, activists and policy-makers. With this observatory, we seek to foster an inter-disciplinary and global community of individuals who want to create more equitable societies in Latin America. Over the next three years, we expect to add continuously to the information posted on the portal.
We have also initiated a working paper series on inequality on our portal. See the link to working papers for more information.
We also fund research on inequality in the form of small grants (US$5000 each) to individuals and institutions. In June 2007, we gave out six small individual grants. In April 2008, we will give out three individual grants and six institutional grants to develop data/resources on inequality that will then be linked to the portal. The deadline for applications is March 14th, 2008. See the link to small grants for details regarding grant applications.
